The Labor Day Golden Classic began in 2006 as a match- up between two SIAC rivals, Miles College and Tuskegee University.

The annual game is played at the historic Legion Field, (also known as The Old Gray Lady), in Birmingham, Alabama and has included games between Miles College and other SIAC rivals such as Morehouse College and Stillman College. It is the first HBCU classic game in Alabama to be held during the Labor Day weekend.

The game also includes an anticipated battle of the bands featuring the Miles College Purple Marching Machine and the band of the opposing team.

Over the past six years, this game has grown to be one of the largest HBCU classic football games in the NCAA Division II level. According to The Onnidan Group, the leading provider of HBCU sports information services, the Labor Day Golden Classic ranked #8 out of 27 HBCU classic match-up games in 2009.

The Labor Day Golden Classic is a source of tourism revenue for the City of Birmingham and has inspired the promotion of numerous activities to be held during the Labor Day Weekend.
